How much gear can I carry on my roof?Updated 10 months ago
The “dynamic” load weight of most large vans is 350 pounds. This is the weight the manufacturer has determined you can safely drive around with. When you’re parked, more weight can be added to the roof (such as two adults sleeping) as long as it is properly supported on the rooftop rails or designated mount points which take advantage of vehicles strong structural bulkheads. This weight is inclusive of any accessories you may add to the roof including awnings, van fans, A/C units and /or other gear. Although spacious and roomy, because it is made of light materials, the PopRak weighs approximately 100 kg (220 pounds). Subtract that from the maximum dynamic load limit for your van and you’ll have what’s left over for rooftop accessories and other gear. Remember, to factor in this weight in determining your vehicle’s remaining useful payload.
